"Bye Mom! Bye Dad!" I said as I hugged my parents and slung my duffel bag over my shoulder. I was so excited... for the first time EVER, my parents were letting me vacation on my own. Well...almost on my own. I was flying out of Kennedy Airport in New York to London, and taking a connecting flight to Austrailia, where I'd be spending the summer with my grandparents. I waved back to my parents one last time before walking up into the crowded 747. It took me a few minutes to find my seat, but once I found it I shoved my duffel bag- complete with a change of clothes, seventeen magazine, my ipod, makeup, cellphone, and casn- onto the shelf above my head. The flight was a red eye- and was supposed to take around 6 or 7 hours or something. I was glad it was nighttime- meant I could sleep through most, if not all of the flight.
I made myself comfy, tucking my pillow against the wall of the plane (i had a window seat) and closed my eyes. When I heard noise from the seat next to me, and smelt fast food, my eyes flicked open and I turned my body to look to see who was sitting next to me.
It was a girl, about my age- with dark brown hair like myself. Hers was long however, and pulled into a ponytail- while mine was short and hung freely around my round, tanned face. She smiled as she chewed a burger king whopper, which she had opened on her laptray. "Want a french fry?" she asked politely, holding a box of frenchfries towards me. I laughed, "Sure, I'm Carey" I said, as I took a french fry and delicately dipped it into an open container of ketchup she had. "Ohhh..i'm sorry. Look at me, i'm a mess.. My name's Brianna." I giggled at her silliness. "I'm going to Austrailia for the summer with my grandparents..where you traveling to?" I asked. She half-smiled, "Austrailia...but not for vacation..." she started. "Oh" was all I said, not wanting to push her into telling me something she didn't feel comfortable telling me, but she took a deep breath and started explaining anyways. "My mom was recently remarried, but her new husbands a prick...so I called my dad and now I'm going to live with him in Austraila." She said. I felt bad, knowing that this must make her uncomfortable- telling me, a TOTAL stranger, about her family problems. I nodded and forced a smile, trying to find a positive side to this, "Well hey! Maybe i'll see you around Austrailia then! It'd be nice to see a familiar face. My grandparents are gonna be the only ones i'll know down there too..." She just smiled at me, and continued eating her burger king meal.
After some more small talk, magazine reading, and ipod listening, i just COULD NOT stay up any longer. We still had about 5 and a half hours till the plane landed in London, so I wedged my pillow up against the window and fell asleep.
When we got to the London airport, Brianna and I both grabbed our bags and filed out off the airplane into the terminal along with all of the other passengers. I yawned and stretched, picking up my duffel bag and trying to find the next terminal I'd need to go to. "Do you know where were supposed to go now?" I heard from behind me. It was Brianna. "Oh yeah, I forgot your going the same way i'm going.." i laughed. "Uh..." i looked around the terminal, for a sign with our flight number on it...but couldnt find it anywhere. Everyone seemed to be rushing by, on their way somewhere, and everyone I tried to stop and ask just nodded at me and continued on their way. "Excuse me-" I said, or "Can you-" but no one was listening. I saw a young boy, with long brown hair standing outside the men's bathroom, his arms folded across his chest. He wasn't running off anywhere! Maybe he could help me. I walked over to him politely, "Excuse me, do you know where section H is? My friend and I-" i said, nodding back to Brianna. Did i just refer to her as my friend? "We have to catch a flight to Austrailia... we're from New York..and well..we dont know our way around very well. " The boy smiled as i asked him for help, seeming to be amused at me. I laughed, feeling embarrased, "What?" I directed at his giggling. He just smiled and shrugged, "section H is that way..he pointed to his left. My buddy Harry and I are on that flight too.." he said as the bathroom door swung open and a tall, goodlooking boy with spikey brown hair came out. He nodded at us, then looked to the boy leaning against the wall, "Ready Danny?" He asked.
"See you birds later then!" Danny called as he and Harry made their way towards the direction he had previously pointed. Brianna stood at my side, equally confused. "What did he just call us?" she asked. "I have NO idea" i laughed, before making my way into the women's bathroom to relieve myself before getting back on another plane. When I looked into the mirror, I realized why Danny was laughing at me. My hair was a MESS. I giggled and slapped Brianna playfully on the arm as she washed her hands at the sink next to me. "Why didn't you tell me I looked like such a pitiful mess!" I cried kiddingly. She laughed, "Well I didn't know you'd go up to the two hottest boys in the AIRPORT to ask for help." she prodded back. I ran my fingers through my hair, trying to brush out the knots and frizz that were created during my airplane sleep. Afterwards, we both grabbed our bags and headed back into the terminal to find section H, stopping only for a few minutes at some smaller stores along the way to pick up things like gum, candy, books, etc.
After we were boarded on THIS plane, a slightly smaller one in fact, we ended up having seats relatively close. They were in the same front section of the plane, but hers was three rows back behind mine, on the opposite side. I smiled lightly and waved to her as we both got situated into our seats. I looked around the cabin, for either of the two boys who helped us find the plane..but didn't see either one of them. I frowned and slid down in my seat, putting in my earbuds and just assuming that they were in another section of the plane.
After about 3 hours of the plane ride and 4 glasses of coke, I had to pee. "Dammitt" I sighed quietly to myself, the old man next to me raising an eyebrow at my profanity. It was hardly profane at all! I got up and "excuse me"-ed my way out into the isle, heading towards the back of the plane to the bathroom. I dreaded using an airplane bathroom. When I got to the back of the plane however, both bathrooms were occupied...with a line of people waiting to get in them. I sighed and turned to a stewardess nearby, "Excuse me, are there other bathrooms onboard?" I asked. She looked past me to the long line at the bathroom and nodded, "Yes, there are two more at the front of the plane..you might try your luck there.." she said, before returning to serve drinks to the passengers. I groaned and started back towards the front of the plane, past the section in the middle where Brianna and I were both in. She was asleep in her seat, her ipod on. I smiled as I walked past and when I got to the front of the cabin, pulled back a blue-velvet drape that led into the business class section. There was a stewardess already in the isle, a foot infront of me. "Yes?" she asked impatiently. I chuckled nervously, REALLY having to pee now. "Bathroom?" I asked. She rolled her eyes and pointed to a small door at the front of the section. WHEW.
After I came out of the bathroom, I was making my way back to coach when I saw Danny and Harry stretched out in airplane seats big enough to be couches. I smiled at Danny as I approached him and stopped for a second at his seat as he greated me. "Why hello again" he said sweetly. I smiled, "Hi...Danny right?" I asked. He nodded, "Yup. And you remember Harry?" he asked. I nodded and waved, "Hi i'm Carey". Danny smiled back at me, and behind his long shaggy brown hair, he had the most beautiful eyes that seemed to hypnotize. The air hostess behind me cleared her throat, signalling me to move out of her way, "Well, I should really get-" I started. I was cut off however with the violent shakes of the plane and a loud explosion-like noise that sent me tumbling onto my hands and knees at Danny's feet. People started screaming and the stewardesses were rushing around, trying to maintain balance as they ran down the isles, telling people to tighten their seatbelts and get into crash positions. I couldn't believe what was happening before my eyes. I struggled to breath, scared for my life, and try as I could- couldn't move a muscle. The airmasks dropped down from the ceiling above our heads as Danny and Harry both pulled on their seatbelts.
I began to panick, wondering how I was ever going to make it back to my seat as the plane threw me back and forth on the ground. Suddenly, I felt arms wrap around my chest and grabbed onto them- scared and not knowing what to do. I looked up. It was Danny, who looked equally as terrified as I felt. He pulled me onto his lap and I put an air mask around my face as I burried my face into his chest. I felt him tighten his arms around my body, which I had curled up into the tightest of balls. I tried to slow my quickened breathing, but it was no use.. I was too scared and practically hyperventillating. The screams of the people in the plane were drowned out by the whistling screaches of the plane as it descended quickly. Then, everything went black....
Danny's P.O.V.
I saw the pretty girl who approached me earlier in the terminal on her way back from the bathroom and leaned out in my seat a little to greet her. "Hello again" i said, smiling. She looked a little more awake now, which amused me. She smiled, "Hi...Danny right?" she asked. I nodded, "Yup, and you remember Harry?" I asked, pointing to my bandmate next to me. We were vacationing in Austrailia for the summer- planning to meet up with our other bandmates Doug and Tom later in the week. She nodded and waved to the boy next to me, before adressing us both, "Hi I'm Carey". This was the first time I had heard her name. She even LOOKED like a Carey. Her name suited her very well. I smiled back at her, glad to see that she made it onto the right plane. I just stared into her deep brown eyes and listened to her talk. She had the cutest American accent... "Well.. I should really get-" she started, before the plane jolted and she was tossed onto the floor. Within seconds, mass pandemonium had broken loose and it reminded me of the zoo back home. People were screaming- like monkeys fighting and hollering, their limbs and necks flailling. Air hostesses were rushing past, telling everyone to put on their seatbelts and get into emergency crash positions: as the airmasks dropped from the ceiling.
Then it hit me. "WHAT?" I screamed to myself, shocked that this was happening. I gulped, and my attention was turned back to the girl on the floor by my feet as she struggled to get enough balance to stand up as the plane was throwing her around like a ragdoll. I grabbed her around the chest, under her arms and lifted her onto my lap and put an airmask around my own face as well as hers before tightly pulling her head into my chest and wrapping my arms around her, holding as tight as I possibly could. I caught her eye, with an expression of sheer terror, as I noticed a piece of metal flying over the seats towards us. I closed my eyes and squinked, bracing myself for pain. The metal scratched my cheek hard, and I felt the body- shaking in my arms, grow still...
I opened my eyes and tilted back the head of the girl in my arms- her forehead bleeding and her eyes closed. I didn't have time to worry however, because seconds later, the plane dove nose first into the water and the cabin began to fill with the chilly, salty water. I unbuckled my seatbelt and helped Harry out of his and we swam to the top of the compartment- which was quickly filling with water. There was only about a foot of airspace left. I turned and looked all over for an escape, when I noticed that the back of the plane had separated from the front. "Follow me!" i yelled to Harry as I swam through the doorway into coach. There was less water in this section- as it stood straight up into the air. The back of the plane was missing and looking straight down the isle only showed the blue sky. I pulled myself, row by row as far back into the plane as I could, carrying the unconscious girl in my arms.
Many of the passengers were bleeding and wounded profusely, however..those that werent were trying to make their way to the opening in the back of the plane and get out- similiar to ourselves. The unhurt were grabbing the injured and pulling them along with them. I grabbed onto the headrest of a seat and pulled myself up with my left arm, trying to walk up what felt like a mountain- the young girl slung over my shoulder. As the plane continued sinking, it became easier, and the water carried me almost all the way to the top, the back of the plane. As i got to the last row of seats, I grabbed the seat cushion and ripped it off, remembering that the air hostess had said they work as flotation devices. "Grab the cushions!" I yelled to Harry, behind me.
Harry's P.O.V.
As i got to the last row of seats in the plane, as it was quickly filling up with water, I shoved aside a suitcase and went to grab a seat cushion for a float when I noticed a thin, young, quite fit, looking girl. She was huddled on the floor between the two sections of seats, shaking with fear and tears. I ripped off the cushion and reached out my hand to her. Sniffling, she took it and I pulled her to her feet, wrapping hear arm around my shoulders as I continued towards the end of the plane- where the back had been clear ripped off.
I stood at the jagged edge- looking down upon the water...Danny at my side. People around us were jumping into the water, and falling about 20 feet..with large splashes and bodyflops as they hit the water. Gulp. "We gotta jump" I said finally. Danny looked at me, terrified. I took a deep breath and continued, "We have to swim as far away from the plane as possible, or the suction will pull us back." I said. He nodded, seeming to understand, and the girl crying at my side became even more hysterical.
"Hey... dont worry.." I tried to encourage her. I thought for a minute... "Wrap your legs around me" I said thinking. She became confused and silent, staring at me. "Just trust me on this" I said, as I wrapped my arms around her and lifted her by her thighs, wrapping her legs around me. I then put the seat cushion against her back and wrapped my arms through two handles on either side, holding her tight. Danny was having a slightly harder time... the girl he was carrying was unconscious..she had no way of helping to hold on or swim at all. After a moment of what seemed to be deep thought on Danny's part, he put the girl down, took his belt off and wrapped it tight around their arms.. "Harry..tighten it!" he said loudly, trying to yell over the screaming engines and people who were either already in the water, or in the cabin behind us. I reached over and tightened the strap as tight as I could. He nodded, picked the girl up and grabbed the seat-floatie, stuffing his hands on either side into the straps. "On Three" he said. I nodded and i felt the girl hugging me tighten her grip around my neck and waist. "One...Two...THREE" he said, and we both jumped off the plane- as far out as we could. The second we hit the water and came back up to the surface, we kicked as hard as we could, feeling the pull of the suction of the plane behind us.
